Freescale unveils next-generation digital signal processor

May 13, 2005 11:36 AM

Freescale Semiconductor announced the introduction of two digital signal processors that it is billing as the first multi-core programmable DSPs produced using 90 nanometer (nm) process technology on a volume scale.

The MSC8122 and MSC8126 DSPs integrate four StarCore DSP cores onto a single die and are designed to quadruple performance over single-core DSP offerings, the company said, adding that it is focusing on reducing the milliwatt-per-MHz ratio in embedded applications by offering optimal power-to-performance processing solutions.

Target markets for the DSPs include radio network controllers and high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) support for basestations, the company said.
