Nortel launches Czech wireless broadband network

Aug 4, 2004 12:00 PM

Nortel Networks, working with Eurotel, the largest wireless voice and data services provider in the Czech Republic, has launched the country’s first CDMA 1xEV-DO network operating in the 450 MHz band, Nortel said this week. The network, which was deployed across the country in about four months, consists of Nortel’s Data-Only Modules, CDMA Metro Cell radio base stations, CDMA base station controllers and Packet Data Serving Node products. Nortel also provided engineering, installation, maintenance and network optimization services. The network was deployed on top of existing hardware to enable Eurotel to leverage prior spectrum and legacy equipment investments, Nortel said. The network is designed to use dedicated, stand-alone radios, which Nortel said would “significantly reduce” installation and operating costs.

In other news, Nortel said Telstra, Australia’s largest telecommunications and information services provider, would upgrade to the vendor’s CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network in major cities and selected regional areas, in order to boost network capacity and provide mobile high-speed data services, particularly to remote workers seeking an “anywhere office experience,” Nortel said. Nortel deployed Telstra’s first CDMA network in 2000 and upgraded it to CDMA2000 1x in 2002.
