U.K.-based research firm IDTechEx predicted that the market for real-time locating systems (RTLS) would grow to $2.7 billion over the next decade, at which point it will represent about 40% of the worldwide market for radio frequency identification technologies. The firm added that the RTLS market tripled in the last year.

RTLS systems are used to locate small electronic devices, people or things at any time. According to IDTechEx, such systems consist of short-range infrared systems and complex, multiple-antenna, multiple-beam long range RFID. Today, most RTLS systems operate in the 300 MHz to 433.92 MHz range, but are expected to move into the 2.4 GHz band as next-generation systems based on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and ZigBee develop, the firm said.
