Key VoIP E-911 deadlines set

An FCC order requiring voice-over-IP (VoIP) providers to provide emergency-calling services through the traditional 911 system was published in the Federal Register yesterday, establishing key compliance deadlines.
Approved by the commission in May, the order becomes effective one month after being published in the Federal Register. Thus, the order will be effective on July 29, and VoIP providers are required to notify their customers of any limitations of their 911 offerings on the same date, an FCC spokesman said.
Of course, the focus of the order was to mandate that all interconnected VoIP services--those with the ability to dial phones on the public switched telephone network (PSTN)--include E-911 capabilities. All VoIP providers must meet this requirement by Nov. 28, the FCC spokesman said.
