New, but not too new

Oct 1, 2003 12:00 PM

There is nothing new about me except that I am the new publisher of MRT. Kind descriptions would label me a grizzled veteran, having been in business-to business publishing for more than 20 years — the last 16 at Telephony and, more recently, Wireless Review, for which I am publisher.

I'm excited to add this excellent publication, and the MRT market, to the other communications industry titles I oversee.

Working in this industry is a natural extension of what I do: I lead publications that deal with the demanding world of communication networks. Telephony, Wireless Review and MRT have different audiences and cover different technologies, but the challenges we explore are similar and real. Our audiences design, build, deploy, maintain or supply equipment to vital networks that are indispensable to our way of life.

MRT's mission is to the be the information leader for this market by providing analysis, insight and thought leadership about the complex issues, technologies and trends that are shaping the industry.

As we all now know, life ain't what it used to be, and because of that we can all use help connecting the dots in our professional lives. That's our role: To help you more easily understand the real world issues and choices you must make.

These are volatile times, in which agendas and priorities change in the blink of an eye. New and established technologies compete for places in our networks, spectrum conflicts and standards battles abound. I'm sure Dylan could hammer out an industry song for the interesting and twisting times we find ourselves in. But our mission as an industry is simple: To make the real world better by taking the budgets, technology and tools we have and creating better, more intelligent communications that improve all of our lives. Much is expected of all of us — our readers, our vendors, and yes, our publication.

Grizzled veterans do have a few advantages: We have seen many battles, watched standards come and go and witnessed new technologies eclipse old ones. Most important, we know this powerful fact: We are all in this together.

P.S. As the new kid on the block, I would appreciate hearing from you — good or bad — on how we're doing and what we can do to serve your needs better. I come from a good-sized Irish family, so I can take a punch (and also throw one).
