Report: Chicago Fire Department network still open to hackers

A racial slur was broadcast over the Chicago Fire Department’s emergency communications network once again this week—the seventh such incident this month—but the CFD said it “has proof” the language didn’t come from one of its radios, the Chicago Sun-Times reported today. If the slur was generated from outside the CFD, it would indicate the network is still open to hackers two weeks after the city began reprogramming 1000 department-issued radios to make it more difficult for outsiders to access the system, the paper said. Fire department officials noted that the reprogramming process is “time-consuming and not yet complete.”
